Dermal Fillers

Sometimes we look in the mirror and are suddenly alarmed by what we see, as though we suddenly aged overnight! As the years go by, our skin’s appearance becomes more and more impacted by our environments which may result in fine lines, deep creases, hollows under our eyes, more noticeable acne and chicken pox scars, thinner lips, or gauntness in our temples and cheeks.

Our skin loses its elasticity, its fullness, and its suppleness because as we age, our skin gradually loses hyaluronic acid and collagen which is what gives our skin that youthful look.

Many people try to reduce the impacts of aging with skin care products and while a skin care routine with cutting edge products can make a big difference, it has a limited impact on age, facial muscles, gauntness, or sun damage.

While neuromodulators may be an effective option, dermal fillers offer a different approach that may be used instead of, or in combination with, neuromodulators.

What are Dermal Fillers and What Do They Do?

Dermal fillers are a cost-effective, minimally invasive cosmetic procedure for adding volume to the skin by filling in gaunt areas and removing wrinkles and lines. Dermal fillers can contain natural or synthetic materials and are injected to create volume and fullness, perking up your face and restoring its youthfulness. Unlike neuromodulators, which work with the face’s muscles, dermal fillers plump and smooth the skin.

Natural fillers like hyaluronic acid, which our bodies produce, provide immediate results which can last anywhere from three to 18 months (sometimes as long as two years). Like the skin’s natural hyaluronic acid, the fillers eventually break down, so follow-up treatments to maintain the effects are key. Natural fillers may not last as long synthetic fillers, but the risk of allergic reactions is significantly lower.

Synthetic fillers are semi-permanent; if your lines and wrinkles return, it’s due to continued aging or sun damage rather than a dissipation of the filler. Ensuring that the effects are long lasting means wearing sunscreen daily and taking special care of your skin.

Our Dermal Fillers

At Rao Dermatology, we use both natural and synthetic fillers selected by our doctor’s and that produce superior results in combination with our skill, technique, experience, and training. We offer Juvederm®, Restylane®, Revanesse, and RADIESSE®. Our doctor’s will select the dermal filler best suited to your skin and your risk tolerance, but here is an overview of each dermal filler product.

Juvederm®

A natural filler, Juvederm® is an injectable gel dermal filler that uses hyaluronic acid to subtly restore fullness, reduce lines and wrinkles, and plump up lips. The injectable contains some lidocaine to reduce discomfort during treatment. Juvederm® produces subtle, natural results that enhance your look and it lasts between one and two years. One of the most commonly used fillers, Juvederm® has a superior history of producing great results with minimal side effects.

Restylane®

Another natural filler using hyaluronic acid, Restylane® provides two decades of innovative research and development to offer a wide variety of gel types that provide varying degrees of fullness and firmness meaning that we can tailor your dermal filler treatment to suit your facial rejuvenation needs.

Revanesse®

A synthetic filler, the Revanesse line uses Thixofix cross-linking technology which slows down the breakdown of hyaluronic acid, making it more durable, longer-lasting, and that stimulates new collagen production in your skin.

RADIESSE®

Another synthetic filler, RADIESSE® is made of Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres that are suspended in a gel and works by providing immediate volume while also continuing to stimulate the body’s natural collagen production. RADIESSE® lasts a year or more and the CaHA microspheres are metabolized by your body, leaving behind only the natural collagen.

If you don’t continue treatment, your symptoms lines and wrinkles, thinness or gauntness, hollows and creases will gradually return.

Injectables

You might be surprised what these can do for you.

Injectables involve instilling a product into the skin. The main options include neuromodulators, dermal fillers, and platelet rich plasma.

They are all complimentary to each other and can help restore a more rejuvenated youthful appearance.

Additional information regarding the injectable procedures you can find at our Edmonton clinic can be found below.

Our Range Of Injectable Treatments

Aging is inevitable, no one can avoid it. As we become older, our skin undergoes natural changes such as losing elastin, thinning skin, thinner blood vessel walls as well as changes beneath our skin like bone loss, cartilage loss, and fat loss in our cheeks, temples, chin, nose, and around our eyes. Together, these unavoidable changes make our skin rougher, looser, more transparent, more fragile, and more easily bruised.

Add to those changes the wrinkles and lines from a lifetime of sun exposure, harsh weather, laughing, smiling, and frowning and we’re all at the mercy of aging, although depending on our health and habits, the impact of aging varies. Regardless, at some point, we all end up with deep lines, hollows, slackness, thinness, and gauntness – particularly in our faces. A healthy lifestyle complete with a healthy diet, militant sunscreen wear, and a good skin care regime can delay the impacts of aging but not prevent them.

What Types Of Injectables Are There?

A neuromodulator (Botulinum toxin type A) is an injectable drug that causes controlled muscle relaxation. When we inject neuromodulators into your facial muscles, it blocks the nerve signals and prevents the muscles from tightening forcefully, allowing the muscles to relax. This muscle relaxation allows the creases in your face that are caused by muscles (think smiling and frowning) to soften. Offering visible results within days, your wrinkles and lines will continue to soften for approximately 30 days, with results lasting up to four months. In order to maintain the effects of neuromodulators, regular treatments are required.

Dermal fillers are injectables that use either natural or synthetic hyaluronic acid to plump up your skin. In contrast to neuromodulators, dermal fillers create volume and fullness which achieve a natural, youthful appearance and fill in thin lips, hollows around the eyes, or gauntness in your temples. The results with dermal fillers are instantaneous and long-lasting (three months to two years). We often use dermal fillers in combination with neuromodulators to achieve the best results since they each have different strengths. Our range of dermal fillers include Juvederm®, Restylane®, Revanesse, and RADIESSE®.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is an injectable therapy that uses your own blood platelets to rejuvenate your skin. By drawing your blood and spinning it down, we then inject the platelets into your skin to improve texture, links, and wrinkles. By placing it deeper into areas like hollows under the eyes or sagginess in the neck, PRP can stimulate other cells to create fuller, healthier looking skin. Because PRP uses your own cells and tissues, the side effects are significantly lower than neuromodulators or dermal fillers. Changes to the skin with PRP are gradual and continue for three to six months and it lasts for about two years.

What are injectables?

Injectables are substances, natural or synthetic, that are injected into the face or neck to reduce the impacts of aging. Injectables can treat hollow or gaunt facial areas, as well as creases, lines, and wrinkles. Our injectables include neuromodulators, dermal fillers, and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP).

Injectable treatments cause minor, temporary discomfort as well as swelling and bruising. We may use a local anesthesia, a topical anesthetic, or a numbing agent for your procedure.

What can I expect from the procedure?

Injectable procedures are quick (15 to 45 minutes). Because we are using a needle to inject the fillers into your skin, you may experience discomfort during and after. You will likely require follow up appointments, but the intervals are dependent upon your injectable treatment.

Will there be a long recovery? Will I need to miss work?

While you may experience some light bruising, swelling, or redness, the recovery is quick and you won’t need to miss work. You can resume your normal activities immediately after the procedure. If you experience any side effects, they usually resolve within one to two days.

Are there any risks associated with injectables?

Risks vary depending on the type of injectable you receive. However, some risks include anesthesia reactions, allergic reactions, bruising, numbness, redness, swelling, or discolouration. Ask your doctor about the specific risks associated with your chosen injectable treatment.
