Rosacea Treatment

Fed up with with facial redness and blushing?

Many individuals suffer from Rosacea, a chronic skin condition characterized by persistent redness of the central face.

It is an inflammatory process that can present with small pimples and dilated small visible vessels within the reddened areas, especially on the chin, cheeks and nose.

Many lifestyles factors can cause rosacea to flare up. Common triggers are hot and cold weather, alcohol, sun exposure, stress, and hot or spicy food and drinks.

Rosacea Treatments

Over two million Canadians are known to be affected by rosacea.  It typically develops between ages 30 to 50 and tends to occur more often in women than men.  It is a chronic condition often misdiagnosed as acne.  Rosacea cannot be cured but definitely can be controlled.   At Rao Dermatology, we can help you establish an optimal treatment plan to treat your rosacea symptoms.

What Causes Rosacea?

According to the latest research, rosacea is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, such as a compromised immune system, possessing fair or light skin, a family history of rosacea, or suffering too much exposure to sunlight.

In any case, the first signs of rosacea can be subtle and may include occasional blushing or a noticeable redness of the skin. Over time, however, these symptoms can become more persistent and pronounced. Bumps, pimples, and enlarged blood vessels may appear, that gives your skin a rough, uneven look. At times, though very rarely, symptoms may be severe enough that the skin tissue of the nose becomes thick, swollen and bumpy – this form of rosacea, called rhinophyma, typically affects older men.

What Type of Rosacea Do You Have?

It is important to have a consultation with an experienced, professional skin specialist, like Dr. Rao, to determine which of the following types of rosacea you possess, and what the best course of treatment will be:

Mild (erythematotelangiectatic): Identified by facial flushing and redness, which may only be present at times. You may also experience some swelling, burning and stinging, roughness and noticeable red blood vessels.

Moderate (papulopustular): This more-advanced form of rosacea is marked by persistent redness and pimple-like bumps that may be confused with acne, as well as burning and stinging.

Severe (phymatous): As mentioned above, rosacea may affect the nose, causing the skin tissue to thicken and become bumpy. This severe form of rosacea is called rhinophyma, and most often occurs when the condition is left untreated.

Rosacea Treatment Options:

As we mentioned earlier, Rosacea can’t be completely cured, but our range of professional treatments have greatly helped Rosacea patients in Edmonton see tremendous improvement in their skins appearance. The best success is usually achieved through a tailored treatment plan that includes suppression and prevention, correction, and ongoing (lifelong) maintenance and management.

The Excel V Laser System is a powerful state-of-the-art laser for treating vascular skin conditions such as Rosacea. This award winning laser uses a high power green laser to target abnormal blood vessels and pigment with ultra precision in the skin.

Melasma Treatments

Tired of wearing a mask?

Melasma is a very common condition of brown discoloration on sun exposed areas of the face, commonly the cheeks, upper lip, and forehead.

Melasma typically worsens with sun exposure, birth control pills, and hormones of pregnancy.

Although it can affect both genders and any race, it is more common in women and people with darker skin types.

Melasma usually becomes more noticeable in the summer and improves during the winter months.

Melasma Treatment

Melasma is a common type of skin discoloration marked by brown patches on the face. Most commonly, it occurs in women between 20 to 50 years of age, women who have naturally darker skin tone, and women who are pregnant. Men rarely experience this type of hyperpigmentation of the skin. In fact, because it’s primarily experienced by women in their reproductive years, it gained the nickname, “mask of pregnancy.”

Melasma is thought to affect more than six million women in North American alone, and most women with this skin discoloration either have a history of regular sun exposure, are pregnant and/or have darker tones of skin, such as Latin, Asian and Middle Eastern ethnicities. Melasma can also become exacerbated by heat, spicy foods, UV, alcohol, exercise and harsh skin products.

The chronic condition is caused by an overproduction of melanin, which is the pigment responsible for determining skin, hair, and eye colour. It’s thought that 25-30% of those with Melasma may have a genetic predisposition to the condition with other family members also being affected.

While it can often disappear or fade over time, in certain cases melasma can become so severe it cannot be concealed by make-up, causing the sufferer to become quite self-conscious of their appearance.

What Causes Melasma?

The exact cause of melasma is unknown, but uncontrolled exposure to sunlight is considered the leading factor, especially in people with a genetic predisposition for hyperpigmentation.

Melasma commonly develops during the summer months, when the strong ultraviolet rays from the sun cause melanin production in the skin cells. This skin discoloration typically fades and becomes less visible in the winter. In the true case of the “mask of pregnancy”, it is thought that melasma may be caused by increased levels of progesterone. In many cases, the hyperpigmentation gradually disappears after giving birth.

Melasma Treatments

Melasma can be one of the most frustratingly difficult skin conditions to treat however with a combination of in-clinic treatments and a strict home care program, the unsightly appearance of melasma can be at least significantly reduced and even in some cases, cleared for a short period of time.

Our treatment options include laser procedures to help reduce hyperpigmentation, medical grade fading creams and facial peels that help lighten and even out the tone and appearance of your skin and a daily skin care routine that includes regular sun protection with broad spectrum sunblock and vitamin C protectants to decrease the skin’s exposure to the sun.

Aging Skin

Solutions For Aging Skin

As we age, we start to notice the sagging looser skin, the tired dull sallow complexion. Then we zoom in closer and obsess over the fine lines , deeper wrinkles ,brown and red spots. These signs start to be visible in our 20’s and become more noticeable as we move into a 30’s, 40’s and beyond.

Our skincare solutions for aging skin are geared towards a few different goals: removing damaged layers of skin; and rejuvenating skin; and nourishing skin to prevent future damage.

These effective treatment options can be combined or implemented separately, depending on each case and desired results.

The Intrinsic and Extrinsic Factors That Cause Aging Skin

Many changes occur in the skin as it ages. While aging is a natural process, a lifetime of bad skincare habits or health issues can speed up the process or lead to undesired changes.  There are both intrinsic and extrinsic factors that cause our skin to age including:

Intrinsic

  • Genetics: If your mother looked older than she actually was, chances are that you will too.
  • Sunlight: The powerful rays of the sun can cause wrinkles and a leathery appearance and texture.
  • Lifestyle: Unhealthy habits such as smoking, poor diet, stress, and substance abuse can all contribute to aging skin.
  • Facial expressions: Repeated facial movements can lead to permanent lines and wrinkles that are etched permanently into the skin over time.

Extrinsic

  • Loss of fat, muscle, and bone: Loss of facial volume and shape can occur as a result of the natural loss of these factors during the aging process.
  • Decreased production of collagen and hyaluronic acid: These two compounds give structure and volume to the skin and decrease in production over time.
  • Changes in hormones: This can lead to unwanted body hair growing in places where it shouldn’t.
  • Blood vessels dilating: Weakened, dilated vessels can lead to facial redness, which can be sensitive and difficult to treat.

The distressing news is that we can never stop the aging process of our skin, it starts in our 20s and is ongoing, but the good news is that we sure can slow it down.

Acne Scar Treatment

Acne Scars can seem like double punishment

First you had to suffer through the pimples, now you have the dreaded marks that never seem to fade as fast as you would like.

Acne scarring can be two fold.

First is the postinflammatory hyperpigmentation which leaves red or brown marks. Second are the ice pick scars which is an indentation or “pit” in the skin.

At Rao Dermatology, we have specialized devices and treatments that can erase or at least minimize these marks and indentations.

Acne Scar Treatment

Acne scars, also known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, are dark or red spots that remain after an acne lesion has healed. When the pore swells from acne, a break occurs in the follicle wall. If the break is deep enough, the redness becomes semi-permanent and indented scars can even occur.

The redness is due to the blood cells that pool in the area and then harden in an attempt to heal the infected pore. While uneven skin texture and pigmentation changes may lessen with time, many people are unhappy with the long-lasting changes caused by acne that may ultimately distract from their appearance.

Fortunately, at Rao Dermatology we employ the most advanced technologies to safely and dramatically reduce the look of all acne scars by reducing pigment, brightening skin, and evening out complexion.

Types Of Scars

  • Icepick Scars – Characterized by thin but deep columns of missing skin tissues. Commonly arising from severe acne, icepick scars usually appear on the cheek or nose.
  • Boxcar Scars – Boxcar scars are round or oval depressions with steep vertical sides. Wider than ice pick scars, boxcar scars give the skin a pitted appearance.
  • Depressed Fibrotic Scars – If ice-pick scars are somehow aggravated, they can transform into large, hard, crater-like scars
  • Macules – Flat pigmented patches. Typically the end result of severe acne, appearing and persisting after the original inflammation.
  • Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation – Appears anywhere on the body and varies in size. Often caused by hormonal changes, and/or acne inflammation.
  • Soft Scars – Generally small, these vary in depth and shape
  • Atrophic Macules – Soft and sometimes blue or white. These can appear on the body as well as the face.
  • Follicular Macular Atrophy – Small, raised, generally white bumps, usually seen on the chest or back
  • Rolling Scars – Rolling acne scars are relatively broad depressions in the skin that have rounded, sloping edges.

If scars are your concern and you are considering treatment, we welcome you for an individualized consultation.

Acne Scar Treatment Options:

At Rao Dermatology we are proud to offer a variety of procedures that will successfully treat all types of acne scars from superficial to deep acne scar tissue. Depending on the type of acne scarring, treatment plans will differ from patient to patient.

We offer a number of different laser treatments that can enhance the look of acne scars including IPL, Laser Genesis, Nano Laser Peel and Sciton Profractional. Our laser treatments offers a degree of control and efficacy that allows for highly precise sculpting of the skin. The laser can target superficial to deep acne scar tissue and is ideal for patients who want dramatic results with minimal down time.

Dermal fillers are an effective way to treat and potentially get rid of certain types acne scars, being particularly effective for rolling scars and some less defined boxcar scars. They are safe and well tolerated, with great results to fill the depression associated with scars. They are excellent for volume loss caused by acne scarring.

Medical Facials are a great way to maintain your skin and treat acne scarring.  They are affordable milder forms of treatment that can still make a difference when done routinely.

Below are some FAQs that our clients have about the liposuction process and results.

Non-Invasive Liposuction Treatments

If you are having trouble losing fat from stubborn areas such as the stomach, thighs, love handles, buttocks and chest, our non-invasive liposuction procedure could be the best option for you.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is Liposuction right for me?

If you’re in good health and believe you can benefit from liposuction, then you are likely an ideal candidate. It is imperative however, to be able to manage your expectations. The procedure has been proven very successful and has provided significant improvements. However, it is not a quick fix for much larger health issues.

Abdominal Liposuction vs. Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, removes excess fat and sagging skin. On the other hand, if you solely have fat excess with minimal skin laxity you are within the realm of liposuction.  Additionally, liposuction is a safer procedure, which has made it the more favourable and common option for fat removal.

Is Liposuction a weight loss remedy?

Liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss regimens. Instead, it is a procedure intended to sculpt your body and eradicate problem areas. Liposuction can be a gateway to further weight loss. As such, when you engage in proper diet and exercise after recovery, you are likely to see weight loss results at a much faster rate. The opposite is also true: if you engage in engage in extreme weight loss activities prior to surgery makes liposuction  more difficult.
